What “invisible text” means
Text is made from Unicode characters, not just the letters that appear on screen. Some Unicode characters change how nearby characters join, control direction in right-to-left text, preserve a non-breaking space, or help emoji display correctly. Others have no visible glyph at all. People usually call these zero-width or invisible characters because you cannot point to a printed shape and see them.
That is why a single unusual character may be harmless. It may arrive through copy and paste, language input, an emoji sequence, a document watermark, or a website’s own formatting. Context matters more than the fact that a scanner found one.
How a Zwisper note differs
Zwisper does not treat every invisible character as a message. It places a structured encoded stream beside the visible cover text. When opening a message, Zwisper looks for its own format marker and validates the encoded data. A stray joiner, a normal emoji component, or another app’s watermark should not be presented as a Zwisper note.
If the note was encrypted, the password or saved contact information is also required to open it. If the data is malformed, altered, or the password is wrong, Zwisper reports that instead of guessing at a private message.
Invisible characters are a property of text. A Zwisper note is a recognised, structured sequence that can be validated and, when encrypted, opened only with the correct secret.
How to inspect text without changing it
- Work with the original text. Copy the message itself. A screenshot, retyped version, or formatting cleanup may remove the characters you are trying to inspect.
- Preserve the context. Keep the visible cover message with it. That helps you understand whether a character could be part of language or formatting.
- Use the Zwisper web app or extension to try opening a Zwisper note. It will only recognise a valid Zwisper-formatted stream; it is not a general-purpose decoder for every invisible-text pattern.
- Do not overinterpret a result. “No Zwisper note found” means the app did not find a valid Zwisper format. It does not prove there are no invisible characters or no data from another system.
Why copy and paste can change the answer
Many editors normalise text. They may replace whitespace, strip zero-width characters, convert rich text to plain text, or alter a message on send. That can remove a hidden note. A message can also pick up invisible characters during ordinary use. For either reason, test the exact route you plan to use and inspect the received text rather than assuming the compose box tells the whole story.
Zwisper checks whether an enabled editor retained the note while you are composing and warns when it can see that the editor removed it. That check cannot guarantee what a service will do after you send, so a real end-to-end test remains worthwhile for an unfamiliar website.
Privacy and safety expectations
Invisible text is not the same as private text. Someone who receives the complete message can inspect its characters; a service that processes the message may be able to detect invisible content; and a security tool may flag unusual sequences. Encryption is what protects the contents of a Zwisper private note. Read the comparison below before treating an invisible-text message as a security boundary.
